Shale gas production could increase Ukraine's resource base fivefold – Ukrgazvydobuvannya

The introduction of technologies that allow producing unconventional gas could increase Ukraine's resource base fivefold, up to 4 trillion cubic meters of gas, according to Oleh Prokhorenko, head of the country's largest gas producer Ukrgazvydobuvannya,

Speaking at a Ukrainian Energy Week Forum in Kyiv Monday, Prokhorenko said: "There are deposits in our fields that have not been involved before. These are deposits that ensured a gas revolution in the U.S... In Ukraine, the resource base is estimated at 800 billion cubic meters, but if Ukraine is able to produce gas from unconventional deposits, it will allow to increase the resource base fivefold."

He also noted that the company had already started pilot projects for developing unconventional deposits.

As UNIAN reported earlier, by the end of 2017, Ukrgazvydobuvannya increased gas output by 4.8%, to 15.25 billion cubic meters.

Ukrgazvydobuvannya is Ukraine's largest gas producer that incorporates four gas industry departments: Shebelynkagazvydobuvannya, Poltavagazvydobuvannya, Kharkivgazvydobuvannya, and Lvivgazvydobuvannya. 100% of the company's shares are owned by NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine.
