Sales of electric cars in Ukraine double in 2018

The Nissan Leaf model was the most popular electric car in Ukraine last year.

Sales of electric cars in Ukraine in 2018 doubled from 2017, to 5,300 vehicles.

The rise was mainly due to imports of used cars whose primary registrations in Ukraine grew by 83.5%, according to the Ukrautoprom Association's press service.

At the same time, growth of demand for new electric vehicles was higher than that for used cars.

If the primary registrations of used electric cars doubled, registrations of new vehicles grew by 2.2 times, the report said.

The Nissan Leaf model was the most popular electric car in Ukraine over the period under review. Its share was 64% on the country's primary electric car market. Some 3,378 vehicles of this model were sold in Ukraine in 2018. In particular, the share of new cars was 94%, it said.

The BMW i3 model ranked second in terms of sales, as some 352 car drivers chose this make. At the same time, 69% of sold BMW i3 were used cars.

The Tesla Model S car was third: 259 Tesla cars (64% of them were used cars) were sold over the period under review.

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive model ranked fourth with 168 cars registered in 2018. Of them, 76% were vehicles with mileage.

The Renault Zoe model was fifth with 142 vehicles sold, used cars accounted for 84% of them.

As UNIAN reported earlier, sales of electric cars in Ukraine in 2017 soared by 2.3 times against 2016, to 2,697 units.

Ukraine's Infrastructure Minister Volodymyr Omelyan earlier said that the total number of electric vehicles registered in Ukraine grew to 12,000 cars in 2018.

The Infrastructure Ministry of Ukraine expects the share of electric car sales on the domestic car market will grow to 15% before 2020 due to a program aimed at the development of the country's electric car market.
