Ukraine's watchdog prevents import of infected fruit from Turkey, Egypt

Tangerines and oranges were infected with Mediterranean fruit flies.

Ukraine's State Food Safety and Consumer Protection Service has prevented the import into Ukraine of a batch of citrus fruit from Turkey and Egypt.

In particular, 22.4 tonnes of tangerines from Egypt were infected with Mediterranean fruit flies, the agency's press service said in a statement on January 22.

In addition, the experts revealed and seized an infected batch of oranges from Egypt amid a phytosanitary inspection at Kyiv region's Zakhidny customs station.

Moreover, a batch of tangerines weighing 17.3 tonnes, also infected with fruit flies, was seized at Ukraine's port of Chornomorsk in Odesa region. The fruit came from Turkey, the report said.

In order to prevent such incidents, the Service sent to Egypt and Turkey notes on non-compliance of goods with Ukraine's phytosanitary requirements.

As UNIAN reported, the State Food Safety and Consumer Protection Service earlier prevented the import of infected tangerines from Poland to Ukraine.
