Russia accounted for 71.6% of fuel assemblies imported by Ukraine in 2018 for its nuclear power plants.
In particular, Ukraine bought almost 335.2 tonnes of Russian nuclear fuel worth US$374.2 million last year, the State Statistics Service of Ukraine said.
Nuclear fuel shipments from Sweden totaled 211.4 tonnes worth US$148.5 million. The share of Sweden was 28.4%.
In 2018 total imports of fuel assemblies for Ukrainian nuclear power plants were estimated at $523.2 million, according to the State Statistics Service.

As UNIAN reported, to diversify sources of nuclear fuel supplies for its nuclear power plants and reduce its dependence on one source, Russia's TVEL company, Ukraine's state-owned Energoatom in April 2014 signed an agreement with Westinghouse, which produces fuel at its plant in Sweden.
At the end of January 2018, Energoatom and Westinghouse extended the supply contract until 2025.
To date, the Swedish fuel is used at Zaporizhia and Yuzhnoukrainsk nuclear power plants.
In December 2017, Ukraine's Minister of Energy and Coal Industry Ihor Nasalyk said that Ukraine in 2018 would reduce the share of nuclear fuel imports from Russia from 60% to 45% of the total consumption balance.

Ukraine ranks seventh globally in terms of the installed capacity of its nuclear power generating units. Energoatom operates four nuclear power plants across Ukraine with a total of 15 power generating units, all with VVER-type reactors. Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, operating six power units with a total capacity of 6 GW, is Europe's largest.
